Have your say on CCTV in private hire vehicles

South Derbyshire residents have the opportunity to have their say on CCTV cameras in private hire vehicles in a consultation run by South Derbyshire District Council.

This follows the publication of Statutory Taxi and Private Hire Vehicle Licensing Standards by the Department for Transport in July 2020.

The Licensing Standards indicate that the council should carry out an investigation on whether CCTV would have a positive or adverse effect on the safety of taxi and private hire vehicle users, including children or vulnerable adults and take into account potential privacy issues.

Councillor Malcolm Gee, Chair of South Derbyshire District Council’s Licensing and Appeals Committee, said: “We would encourage drivers and people who use private hire vehicles to take part in this consultation.

“There is no current evidence of crimes being committed within private hire vehicles licensed with this council but, before considering whether CCTV systems should be compulsory in the vehicles, we would like to hear from people to hear their thoughts on the issue.”

The survey will remain open until Friday 13 August.
