South Derbyshire residents are asked to commemorate Remembrance Sunday at home this November.

Due to restrictions in place because of the coronavirus pandemic, South Derbyshire District Council will not be holding the usual Remembrance Sunday events on Sunday 8 November.

This decision has been made in consultation with the Royal British Legion, which had already make plans to cancel the annual Remembrance Sunday parade and service.

Councillor David Muller, South Derbyshire District Council’s Chairman said: “The decision to cancel the usual remembrance parades and ceremonies is not a decision that the Council or the Royal British Legion has taken lightly and has been taken to ensure the safety of veterans, residents and staff.

“People should not come along to Swadlincote war memorial at 11am on Remembrance Sunday.

“We are, though, committed to the remembering the sacrifices of the men and women from South Derbyshire during wartime and we are encouraging people to take part in our virtual commemorations from home.”

More details about the virtual commemorations will be released on the South Derbyshire District Council website in the coming weeks.
