South Derbyshire residents are reminded of the need to maintain social distancing during Friday’s celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day.

The day marks the German surrender and the end of the Second World War in Europe and is an opportunity to pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of the  Second World War generation, from British, Commonwealth and Allied Forces to evacuees and those who served on the Home Front.

Councillor Martyn Ford, South Derbyshire District Council’s leader said;

“We owe our liberty to the generation who fought for our freedom and kept the country going at home in many different ways.

“Sadly, we cannot celebrate as people did 75 years ago with public celebrations and street parties so we are asking people to mark the day in their own homes, gardens and doorsteps, while maintaining the current social distancing rules.”

People are encouraged to take part in a national two minute silence at 11am on Friday to remember those who lost their lives during the Second World War.

South Derbyshire’s town crier, Karen Bailey will be taking part in a Nation’s Toast to the Heroes of WWII at 3pm and taking part in Cry for Peace Around the World at 7pm.

Further festivities will be broadcast on television and online including an address to the nation by Her Majesty The Queen at 8pm and a national sing-along to “We’ll Meet Again” popularised by Dame Vera Lynn during the war.
