Tai Chi classes help gain strength and focus

Tai Chi Tai Chi

Those looking for a gentle but effective form of exercise are being invited to join calming Tai Chi classes in the heart of The National Forest.

Tai Chi is a Chinese martial art, which encourages the movement and well-being of internal organs of the body through the stimulation of Chi - energy.

Sessions also help to increase suppleness, balance and general well-being as well as helping to stimulate brain activity and the power of memory.

Chris Davoll from Derbyshire has been attending the group for the past nine years. She said:

“I first joined the group shortly after the sudden death of my husband.

“I found the exercises helped me to relax and overcome some of the issues I faced at that time. For several years I had also experienced occasional back discomfort. This is no longer the case. The gentle exercise has helped improve the suppleness of this area. I have met new people and have enjoyed their company and friendship.”

Andrew Marshall, a registered Tai Chi instructor, leads the group at Rosliston Forestry Centre every Tuesday afternoon from 3pm to 4.30pm.The group consists of participants of varying levels and costs £3.75 per person.

Martyn Ford, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council said:

“This group exercise is a great way to keep fit as well as meet like-minded people from all walks of life. We look forward to welcoming people of varying levels, from beginners to the advanced. Tai Chi is a gentle martial art that takes time and practice to perfect in which we hope to help with.”

Anyone interested is welcome to turn up just ahead of the session start time. You need to wear comfortable clothing but no special footwear – bare feet or socks are ideal.
