Annual Report showcases Council successes

The extensive work being done to make South Derbyshire a better place to live, work and visit has been captured in a new document.

South Derbyshire District Council’s annual report for 2017/18 gives residents and members of the business community an insight into its performance, priorities and major projects.

Key achievements during the year include the unveiling of Swadlincote’s Diana, Princess of Wales, Memorial Garden, the delivery of 176 affordable homes and the launch of a new Council website.

Other highlights include Maurice Lea Memorial Park in Church Gresley being named as one of the best in the country, the Council being presented with a Gold Medal by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) Awards for its work to keep residents safe and the Waste less, Save more project scooping a hat-trick of Green Apple Awards at the Houses of Parliament.

For the tenth successive year, the Council was certified with the flagship ISO14001 Standard, which recognises the efforts of organisations in managing and minimising their environmental impact.

Performance was also strong, with fly-tipping incidents reducing by nine per cent compared to previous years, 221 entrepreneurs being supported through the South Derbyshire Business Advice Service and 97 per cent of tenants being satisfied with their new Council home.

Cllr Martyn Ford, Leader of South Derbyshire District Council, said:

“South Derbyshire continues to grow in all aspects. It is welcoming greater numbers of tourists, businesses are continuing to invest and expand and more people are making it their home.

“We are extremely proud of our achievements during 2017/18, which show the District has continued to change for the better.  

“Our aim now is to build on the strong foundations set down. We recognise the importance of acting upon what residents and businesses are saying to ensure that South Derbyshire continues to be a prosperous, attractive and growing District well into the future.”

As well as achievements against Corporate Plan themes of People, Place and Progress, the annual report outlines the Council’s values, financial position and work with partners.
